    PALOUSE SCHOOL Dist. # 301

    SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER

    March, 2020

    BUDGET/LEVIES:

Thank you to the Palouse voters for approval of both the Capital Projects levy and the General Fund levy. Your financial support allows us to continue providing quality opportunities for our students and to continue researching/implementing new educational opportunities, in addition to upgrading our facilities. THANK YOU, PALOUSE!

    School Board Directors/Trustees

Lindsay Brown, Jessica Smith, Andra Edwards & Rachel Handley-Chartrand were elected to serve on the Palouse board and join Joe Merrill to make our 5 directors.

    Coop Strategic Planning

You may have noticed agendas posted for Joint Board committee meetings the last couple of months.  Trustees are reviewing the Coop language to insure relevance in 2020 and to foster the growth of the Coop well into the future. These are public meetings and all are welcome to attend!

    Facilities:

In the last newsletter we mentioned that Palouse School had been awarded a $50,000. grant for a study/audit of the school facilities in preparation for a 5 million facility upgrade grant for which we applied. If received, the OSPI Rural Modernization Grant would provide upgrades/replacement of the school roof system, HVAC systems (heating/cooling) and upgrade the electrical system. Although Palouse was not awarded the grant this go around, we are in a good spot for funding in the next round of funding, which we hope the legislature will approve this session!

The Board approved our summer 2020 projects utilizing our Capital Projects funding (thank you tax payers) to include repaving several areas/parking lots around the school, replacing the sidewalk to the upper gym and adding a restroom to the weight room facility. Over the next few weeks we will be obtaining bids and finalizing plans for these projects!

    Negotiations Update:

Negotiations for the Garfield-Palouse Joint Boards and the GPEA (GarPal Education Association) were completed in late January. The contract was for 3 years with a 6.5 %, 3.1% and 2% raise in addition to some language items.  A summary of the agreed upon contract terms/language can be seen on the Web Site under Negotiations. A copy of the entire GPEA contract will be added when completed!

    Legislative Update:

Earlier this month, I travel to Olympia with some area superintendents to visit with our Representatives and Senators to advocate for school funding and discuss issues affecting our students. My impression was that most felt there would be limited dollars directed to schools during this short session.  One area that at the time was showing momentum which would benefit Palouse was funding for the Small School Modernization Grants referred to above. We will be monitoring this and other bills to see the final version on the final day of the session, which is March 12th!

2020 Census – Your Participation is CRITICAL

It is extremely important that everyone in our community participates in the 2020 Census as these numbers affect several federal funded education programs here in the Palouse School and several County/local programs for the next decade. We need your support to make sure you are counted!  Most of us (95%) will receive the census information by mail, but you may respond by email, mail or phone. They tell us that participating takes about 10 minutes to answer 10 questions, but it can mean thousands of dollars for our school, so your efforts to participate is greatly appreciated.  Census day is April 1st and the on-line portal opens March 12th! If you do not receive census information you should contact the county or myself and we can direct you to the proper contact.

Please feel free to stop by for a visit or to contact me for further information!

    Have a great day!
